Campbell River students will receive cycling safety lessons at elementary schools
May 3, 2024 - Grade 4 and 5 students across School District 72 (SD72) will receive a bike safety education course through a partnership with HUB Cycling.
“Being chosen as one of two recipient communities to receive the bike education program through HUB Cycling’s Small Community Pilot Project is very exciting. We are thrilled for our Grade 4 and 5 teachers to participate in this training so that they, in turn, can provide an opportunity for students to learn about bike safety skills, [and] rules of the road, and begin to develop their physical literacy skills and confidence on a bicycle,” says Georgina Knox, district physical literacy coordinator for the Campbell River School District.

A study from the University of British Columbia found e-bike adoption subsequently surged in that community – with 60 per cent of purchasers being entirely new to cycling.

Safety improves but equity lags in Metro Vancouver bike infrastructure
May 8, 2024 - A study on Metro Vancouver’s cycling network finds that while safety and accessibility has been improving, there is still more work to be done to make cycling more accessible.
Women remain under-represented, for example, and those who bike to work tend to be wealthier and whiter.
“Cycling tends to be higher where cycling routes are more comfortable for all, and this allows more women to cycle,” the report from HUB Cycling notes.
