  • 2-way traffic on Beach Ave. West of Denman will Doom the Future of any Stanley Park bikeway to nothing

    Meeting Date:

Report to Council on Imagine West End Waterfront Parks, Beaches and Transportation Vision

I think what this amendment does do from Councilor Boyle is prevent the sort of presupposition that a new Stanley Park bike lane is never going to happen. Because I think what we can all agree on is that the introduction of two-way traffic will induce more vehicular demand, will change the dynamics within Stanley Park itself, regardless of the fact that this is outside of Stanley Park, it will influence the outcome of Stanley Park. And, you know, I've also ridden that Stanley Park, the old temporary bikeway, including with members of Council who might be sitting here today.

And it was a very pleasant experience. And I think it was well-received and it had a lot of potential to really make a tremendous improvement to our Stanley Park. And recognizing that it is a great means for active transportation for folks who don't want to visit the park in a car.

And I recognize that there are some people who prefer to drive and sit in their car while they go through the park, but there's others of us who like the fresh air and the experience of riding a bike through the forest. So recognizing those sort of competing demands, I think that this allows us to kind of wait for that promised report back to park board, which was supposed to happen in summer 2024, the parks were going to have an opportunity to look at a new configuration for a bikeway through Stanley Park. Councilor Boyle's amendment allows us to keep those options open.

In the absence of it, we're pretty much dooming the future of the Stanley Park bikeway to nothing. So I support Councilor Boyle's amendment. Okay, thanks very much, Councilor.

Staff Presentation on Transportation: Gap in Portside Greenway map between Clark and Lakewood

....Starting with the active transportation routes and sort of completing some of those gaps. I mean, I think on the Portside Greenway map, you even showed the gnarliest part of it between Clark and Lakewood is dotted, which I'm assuming means it's not going to be completed as part of this.

    How are we prioritizing?

  • Removal of electrical transformers on City Streets can make room for bike parking

EVs, and actually, no, so while you're up here, maybe I'll ask you about the, in recommendation B, talking about the pad-mounted transformers, what's changing here? What are we contemplating to make this more equitable and allow bike parking and stuff?
