HUB Cycling Diversity Policy
Approved by the HUB Board of Directors April 2019
Introduction
Inclusion is an underpinning value of what HUB Cycling stands for, as reflected in our Core Values:
Respect all forms of transportation.
Value cycling as a community building tool and as a healthy practice for individuals and our environment.
Provide inclusive, forward-thinking programs and services, known for engagement and empowerment of the community and their transportation choices.
We view the diversity of our members and communities as assets and strive to create and sustain a diverse and culturally competent organization that reflects the populations we serve. This is central to our mission, “to get more people cycling more often” and to our ongoing efforts to remove barriers to cycling.
Policy Statement
HUB Cycling is committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive organization and to working with people and communities to support them to thrive and prosper. Diversity is integral to this commitment. Diversity among our members, volunteers, staff and Board of Directors allows us to better understand, connect to, and respond to the needs of HUB members and broader communities.
This policy provides a framework to which all other policies should conform. It provides direction to staff, members, volunteers, and the Board.

Diversity: The visible and invisible differences that exist among people, including but not limited to: gender identity, race, ethnic origin, age, place of residence, sexual orientation/identity, economic status, language, religion, education and family/marital status
Equity: A strategy to promote fairness. Giving individuals the resources they need in order to be successful. Equity may include equal treatment or treatment that is different but is considered equivalent in terms of benefits, obligations and opportunities.
2024 Update
HUB Cycling is proud to share our annual update for 2024, highlighting our commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. This year, we promoted community rides and workshops, board diversity, mentorship, and seniors programs. We supported First Nations communities and piloted bike education in small towns. To foster a more inclusive environment, we revised potentially harmful language. Our initiatives also included engagement plans for strategic development and youth employment programs through the YWCA GEAR UP! Training Program for Youth with Barriers to Employment and Youth Climate Corp technicians. These efforts aim to enhance the cycling culture's diversity, inclusivity, and vibrancy, creating a more connected and supportive community across Metro Vancouver and beyond. Fall 2023 Update

As we embark on another year of advancing our mission to promote cycling as a sustainable and inclusive mode of transportation, it is with great enthusiasm and commitment that we present our semi-annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) update. This update reflects our ongoing efforts to create a more welcoming and representative space for all individuals, irrespective of their background, abilities, or experiences. Spring 2023 Update
May 2023
Over the past year, HUB Cycling developed an Equity Framework intended for application in all the areas HUB Cycling operates on the traditional, unsurrendered territories of many First Nations. This framework aims to provide high-level vision, guidance, and accountability by outlining past harms, current policies and goals, and other vital directions to create the future of an equitable and just organization. The primary audience for this framework is HUB staff, intending to enable them to be equitable in everything we do, from hiring new team members to communities we serve. This framework is a living document and a source of education, reference, and inspiration for anyone interested in learning more about HUB Cycling’s efforts to be a more inclusive organization. Fall 2022 Update
November 2022
During the second half of 2022, HUB Cycling continued our work providing low-cost or subsidized cycling education to marginalized and racialized communities, researching barriers to cycling equity in Metro Vancouver, creating marketing materials in different languages, and changing internal policies to be more inclusive.
For a second consecutive year, HUB Cycling collaborated with Red Fox Healthy Living Society to deliver cycling programs for First Nations and BIPOC youth around Metro Vancouver.
In June, HUB Cycling released the “Making the Case for Cycle Highways in Metro Vancouver” report, drawing on a separate equity analysis to highlight areas with high concentrations of equity-deserving groups that would benefit from improved active transportation.
HUB Cycling also updated our policies to enable staff to attend community events and continue their learning during National Indigenous Peoples Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Spring 2022 Update
April 2022
To get more youth cycling, we need to understand the motivations and barriers that prevent young people from adopting cycling. This year, HUB Cycling formed a new Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) to engage youth in cycling advocacy. HUB Cycling wants to empower youth to learn, build, grow, and share knowledge on the future of building equitable and active transportation solutions. By creating a platform for collaboration, the YAC will explore the intersections of active transportation, social equity, the climate crisis, and other issues critical to youth.
HUB Cycling wants to ensure that adults from marginalized and racialized segments of our community have the opportunity to learn the basics of cycling as well. This year, with funding from BC Government Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Grants, we developed a marketing campaign to offer free online Online StreetWise Cycling education (for adults) to equity-deserving groups.
In HUB’s continuing efforts to decolonize and introduce more equity and inclusion, we have updated our policies to allow staff to substitute statutory holidays for other days that are more meaningful.
Fall 2021 Update

Earlier this year, we shared our commitment to standing up and speaking out against racism and injustice in all forms, good intentions alone are not enough. Here is our semi-annual update on our diversity, equity & inclusion efforts.
Our team continues to proactively use a diversity & equity lens, be it the images we use or the audiences we try to engage with. We now share our content in Farsi, create videos in Punjabi to showcase and promote new infrastructure, design event posters and social media content in French, Punjabi, Farsi, Hindi and Mandarin, organize webinars to promote adaptive cycling to help reduce barriers to people with mobility challenges. We have media partnerships with Sing Tao, The Filipino Post, The South Asian Post and Asian Pacific Post, to reach audiences from different cultural and language backgrounds.
One of the legacies of colonialism is our Christian-centric list of statutory holidays in B.C. This year, HUB Cycling decided to shake up this status quo to demonstrate that we as an organization respect all faiths, religions, and backgrounds.

During the past year, violent racist events have reminded us to take stock of diversity, equity & inclusion at HUB Cycling.
Like many organizations, HUB believes that Diversity Matters.

Inclusion is an underpinning value of what HUB Cycling stands for, as reflected in our Core Values.
Hateful incidents across Metro Vancouver during the past couple of weeks have once again reminded us about our society’s systemic foundation in colonialism, white supremacy, and racism. For far too long, many segments of our community have been systematically discriminated against and oppressed.
To those impacted, as a community or personally, we see you, we support you, and we stand with you.
