Spring 2025 Pedalling Progress: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Update

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: 2025 Mid-Year Update

At HUB Cycling, we are committed to building a cycling culture that is safe, inclusive, and accessible for everyone. Below is a snapshot of recent actions and ongoing progress in our DEI efforts:

2025 Diversity Survey Results

We conducted our second annual Diversity Survey for HUB staff and board members. This year, we separated the survey into two parts: one for staff and board, and one for Local Committee members (to be reported in a future update).

Results show that our staff and board reflect regional demographics in many areas, such as gender identity, disability, and sexual orientation. However, we recognize continued overrepresentation of dominant groups in categories such as ancestry, religion, language, and geographic location. We are actively working to address these gaps through inclusive hiring practices and fostering a welcoming workplace culture.

New Event Accessibility & Communications Guide

To ensure HUB events are inclusive and welcoming, we launched an Event Accessibility and Communications Guide. This practical resource supports staff with:

  • Describing the physical accessibility of venues
  • Sharing content in plain, inclusive language
  • Enhancing online communications and social media accessibility
  • Using alt text for images and graphics
  • Embedding accessibility in event planning and registration processes

This guide is a living document, and we welcome ongoing contributions to improve its effectiveness.

Culturally Inclusive Programming

Our Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Accessibility (IDEA) Committee has launched a timeline to enhance cultural inclusivity. We are currently:

  • Surveying HUB members about their cultural backgrounds and cycling needs
  • Reviewing demographic data across Metro Vancouver
  • Engaging directly with cultural communities to co-create relevant cycling resources

More outreach and programming improvements will roll out in the coming months.

New Richmond Cycling Map

HUB worked with JonesMaps to develop a fully redesigned cycling map for the City of Richmond. This map includes accessibility improvements such as:

  • Colour-blind-friendly design elements
  • Use of symbols and plain language to support multilingual users

Bike Parking Retrofit Program

HUB has launched a free bike parking retrofit advisory service, supported by City of Vancouver funding. This service helps building owners, stratas, and managers retrofit bike parking facilities, especially in buildings housing residents from equity-deserving groups.

Strategic Plan 2025–2030

HUB’s newly updated five-year Strategic Plan reinforces our commitment to equity and inclusion. Key objectives include:

  • Diversifying our board, staff, volunteers, members, and participants to reflect the communities we serve
  • Expanding “comfortable for most people” cycling routes across BC for people of all ages and abilities

More details on our new strategic directions and upcoming DEI actions will be shared soon.

Multilingual E-Bike Video

To encourage e-bike adoption among people whose first language is not English, HUB has translated our e-bike explainer video into French, Hindi, Mandarin, and Spanish.

Upcoming Equity Engagement with Bakau Consulting

In the months ahead, HUB Cycling will be working with Bakau Consulting, a leading Canadian equity and anti-racism firm, to guide us through a participatory and community-centered equity engagement process. This work will include:

  • Facilitated engagement sessions with HUB staff, board, Local Committees, and volunteers
  • A review of current policies, practices, and organizational materials
  • A final report and strategic roadmap with measurable goals, timelines, and recommended actions to increase equity and representation across HUB

Bakau’s approach is grounded in values of anti-oppression, intersectionality, feminism, and community collaboration. Their methodology prioritizes the voices and lived experiences of equity-deserving and racialized communities to help build sustainable, systemic change within organizations. We look forward to learning and growing through this partnership and will share outcomes as the project progresses.
