Streets for People Self-Guided Tour

This initiative took place on the traditional and unceded territory of the Halq'eméylem speaking Coast Salish peoples. This refers to a language group that more widely encompasses the Indigenous people who used and continue to use this land, and includes nations such as the Qayqayt, qʼʷa:n̓ƛʼən̓(Kwantlen), Katzie, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Stó:lō, sc̓əwaθn məsteyəxʷ (Tsawwassen), and Tsleil-Waututh.

About Streets for People

In early May, the City of New Westminster Council passed the Streets for People in 2020 motion, directing staff to accelerate already planned reallocations of road space to support people walking, cycling, and socializing in their communities. City staff engaged HUB Cycling to develop an implementation plan, deliver activation events to raise public awareness and support, engage with people to get their impressions and ideas, and evaluate the outcomes of the Streets for People in 2020 initiative.

Self-Guided Tour

People who took the tour by walking, wheeling or rolling between Friday, September 25th to Monday, October 12th were entered in the draw for a chance to win the grand prize.

The accessible and family-friendly tour highlights 10 points of interest over 5.5km and can be completed at your own pace (approximately 1-2 hours). You can split the tour into a Downtown part (stops #1 - 5) and an Uptown section (stops # 6 - 10).

Stops include the Quayside Boardwalk, McInnes Overpass, Cool Streets, and a couple more nifty areas of New West. “Cool Streets” improve access to parks and open space and have natural cooling thanks to the shade of large street trees.

More information on the route and what to expect is available with our visual story here. The visual story provides the map and engagement with pictures and simplified language with a visual discription of the route. For more information about accessibility, see our Accessibilty Guide here.

The self-guided tour includes a Tour Map, and a virtual example tour.

Guidebook

The prize draw is over, but you can still do the tour, using the guidebook for fun facts and directions to each stop. Use it as your compass and guidebook!
