Mid-Term Report Card for Vancouver City Councillors & Commissioners

HUB Cycling’s Vancouver Local Committee reviewed two years of Vancouver City Council and Park Board meetings at this halfway point in their mandate to see how each Vancouver City Councillor and Park Board Commissioner voted on cycling-related motions.

The Committee developed a mid-term report card with a letter grade based on their votes. An “A” letter grade was achieved by Councillors and Commissioners who consistently supported cycling-friendly policies, a “C” letter grade indicates Councillors and Commissioners who were less consistent in their support, and an “F” letter grade indicates Councillors and Commissioners who regularly voted for measures that would make cycling worse for people on bikes.

Mayor Ken Sim and the 10 Vancouver City Councillors received the following grades:

  • Grade A: Green Party's Councillor Pete Fry and Councillor Adriane Carr, and One City's Councillor Christine Boyle
  • Grade C: ABC's Councillor Lisa Dominato and Councillor Sarah Kirby-Yung
  • Grade F: ABC's Mayor Ken Sim, Councillor Lenny Zhou, Councillor Mike Klassen, Councillor Peter Meiszner, Councillor Rebecca Bligh, and Councillor Brian Montague

Vancouver’s seven Park Board Commissioners received the following grades:

  • Grade A: Green Party's Commissioner Tom Digby
  • Grade C: Independents (formerly ABC) Commissioner Scott Jensen, Commissioner Brennan Bastyovanszky, and Commissioner Laura Christensen
  • Grade F: ABC's Commissioner Jas Virdi, Commissioner Angela Haer, and Commissioner Marie-Claire Howard

A significant feature of the report card is the option to see and hear selected quotes from the representatives who had relevant comments at Council and Park Board meetings. There is also a video available with highlights of key meeting clips.

“It is our hope that Vancouver residents will use this report card to ask our City Council and Park Board to do better in the remaining term. We encourage you to send a short message to the Council or Park Board noting their record so far and address issues that are particularly important to you. We’re also encouraging residents to get out & vote for pro-cycling/active transportation candidates in the upcoming by-election on April 5th for Christine Boyle and Adriane Carr's vacated spots on Council. Voting for cycling-friendly advocates is more important now than ever as both former/outgoing councillors were bike supporters,” says HUB Cycling’s Vancouver Local Committee Member, Lisa Slakov.
