ABOUT THE ROLE
This role leads HUB Cycling’s work to improve cycling conditions in British Columbia through powerful, inclusive communications and strategic advocacy campaigns. You will manage a high-performing team and support a network of dedicated volunteers to mobilize public and decision-maker support. By building strong relationships with partners and underrepresented communities, you will amplify diverse voices to create a safer, more connected province for all people riding bikes.
The Director of Advocacy and Communications will report to the Executive Director and will supervise the Marketing Manager, Community Manager and Manager of Infrastructure, Policy and Planning.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Advocacy
- Manage public and decision-maker-focused campaigns that make biking better in British Columbia (i.e. UnGapTheMap, BC budget submissions, I Bike. I Vote., etc), with a focus on improving cycling infrastructure for equity-denied groups
- Develop plans and materials for campaigns, including responsive campaigns to government and policy-maker processes (e.g. Motor Vehicle Act reforms)
- Collaborate with local, regional, First Nations, and provincial partner organizations and decision makers to achieve campaign objectives
- Build relationships with equity-denied groups, understanding their lived experiences, priorities, and potential barriers to participation in our advocacy work
- Secure funding to support HUB’s advocacy and new initiatives, to support long-term sustainability and expansion of our work with new audiences
- With the support of your team, build the capacity of our 10 volunteer local committees and other volunteer advocates, including our board advocacy committee
- Review and approve letters to decision makers, drafted by volunteer advocates, ensuring a consistent voice and evidence-based information is included across various communications.
- Identify and design research and community engagement projects that advance or inform key advocacy goals. Secure necessary funding, tools, or partnerships to execute research initiatives.
- Oversee staff, contractors and volunteers in the collection and analysis of community data and external research.
Marketing and Communications
- Develop strategies to build the reputation and capacity of HUB Cycling as a trusted resource for cycling education, advocacy, celebration and research
- Oversee and evolve the brand identity across all programs and initiatives, ensuring consistency in tone, visuals and messaging
- Support the organization in bringing more people to the HUB Cycling website and other communication channels
- Serve as a key spokesperson for HUB Cycling, including representing HUB Cycling in media interviews, drafting and distributing media releases, op-eds, blogs or other articles
- Maintain our list of active media contacts and support the other staff in achieving media coverage
- Provide semi-annual public accountability updates on IDEA in collaboration with IDEA Committee
- Create low-barrier opportunities for volunteers and community members to share their voice on a regular basis
- Support the organization in engaging and growing the number of HUB Cycling members, particularly with equity-denied communities that are underrepresented in our membership
- Ensure all communications are clear, inclusive and include ethnic, gender, ability and age diversity in marketing images and videos
Leadership
- Manage staff and ensure their targets are being met, provide guidance to better achieve our mission. Direct reports include Community Manager, Infrastructure Planning & Policy Manager, and Marketing Manager.
- Cultivate a workplace culture that promotes inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility
- Develop and manage the annual budget and operating plan for your areas of responsibility
- Contribute to the HUB Cycling Leadership Team - provide strategic and operational input to the broader HUB Cycling organization (eg: staff meetings, strategic planning)
YOU ARE
- A strategic and motivated leader
- Skilled at telling a convincing and clear story about the value of cycling and the value of our work
- Adept in developing successful campaigns and working with diverse groups and interests, including volunteers, community groups, and government staff and officials
- A problem-solver that can balance internal objectives and external pressures/limitations
- An exceptional time manager with a keen sense for prioritizing.
- Someone with strong leadership skills and the ability to effectively hire, supervise, evaluate and motivate staff members.
- Passionate and knowledgeable about cycling for transportation
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- About 5 years of progressive leadership experience in communications or non-profits
- Success in leading campaigns that advance HUB Cycling’s strategic priorities, including more cycling infrastructure, programs and access to cycling for equity-denied communities
- Demonstrated proficiency in leading a team to strong results and with high retention
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with partners, volunteers and staff
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to a broad range of audiences.
- Experience with social media marketing and/or marketing communications and plans
- Committed to the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility
BONUS POINTS FOR
- Experience working on membership and/or behaviour change campaigns
- Competent public speaker with media experience
- Commitment to and enjoyment of bicycling in the city.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a full-time position (35 hours/week) starting in May. Compensation is $72,000-88,500 per year, depending on alignment with our core requirements, years of additional experience, and the unique value of your lived experience/complementary skills, which we view as a professional asset to our team. Alternative work schedules, such as a four-day week, are a potential.
All staff are expected to work remotely part-time. The successful candidate will need access to their own cell phone and a reliable home internet connection. Office space is available for up to three days a week at 312 Main Street, Vancouver. Staff must be reasonably available for in-person meetings and events in Metro Vancouver. Occasional travel within BC may be required to support key advocacy initiatives (e.g. travelling to meet with MLAs in Victoria).
