Women's Summer Cycling Program

Are you looking for a supportive community of new riders to help you grow your cycling skills? Look no further than HUB Cycling’s Women's Summer Cycling Program!

Did you know that women only represent about a third of Canada's cycling population*? This program aims to change that by helping you feel more comfortable using a bicycle for transportation.  Register to build skills, and confidence and make friends with other women on their cycling journey.  Over six summer evenings, you'll have fun covering topics like basic maneuvering, how to maintain your bike or plan the safest route in the city.  Non-binary and trans-inclusive, our experienced instructors will help you develop your skills in a safe, community-oriented environment. By creating a community of women who are interested in skill sharing and group encouragement, we hope to build women's cycling confidence enough that they can ride throughout the city in safety and comfort.  This program is open to women of any skill level, but geared towards beginners.

This program ran over six, 2-hour sessions in July and August of 2023, starting with the basics of cycling and maintenance and culminating with group rides around the neighborhood! We hope to offer this program again in 2024.

FAQs

What skill level is required to take part in the Women's Summer Cycling Program?

This program is perfect for complete beginners! If you've never ridden a bike before, or perhaps haven't ridden one since you were a child, then this program is for you!

Where are lessons held?

The lessons will take place next to Trout Lake Community Centre, on the Trout Lake field next to the parking lot.

Do I need a bike and helmet?

If you have your own bike and helmet, please bring them to the lesson. If you don't own a bike or can’t transport it to the lesson location, we will have a fleet of 15 bikes and helmets that participants will be able to use for the duration of the lesson.

How can I get my bike to the program spot?

You can bring your bike inside a personal vehicle, on a vehicle's bike rack, on a bus bike rack, or Skytrain car. If it's your first time using a bus bike rack or bringing a bike on transit - check out TransLink's helpful tips beforehand. All Metro Vancouver buses are able to take 2 bikes on their front racks.

How can I get to Trout Lake Community Centre?

Trout Lake Community Centre is located in the southwest corner of Trout Lake Park. You can find transit options either via Google Maps or through Moovit. There is free parking available outside the Community Centre (located near Victoria and 15th). Nearby cycling routes can be found here.

I have children and do not have options for childcare. Will you be offering childcare at this program?

Although we do not officially offer childcare, if this is a barrier to you joining the program, we may be able to arrange for a qualified volunteer to do some childminding at the Trout Lake Playground during the program.

Do I have to attend all six sessions?

Due to the community-minded nature of the program, we strongly advise that you only sign up for the program if you intend to attend all six sessions. Life can throw you curveballs, of course, so if something happens and you cannot attend one or two sessions, please just make sure to inform us at streetwise@bikehub.ca
