What have your local committees been up to this fall?

HUB Local Committees have been busy advocating for better biking and safer roads for vulnerable road users - hosting monthly committee meetings, meeting with municipal staff and City Councillors, collaborating with active transportation stakeholders and community groups, hosting social and assessment bike rides and pushing municipalities to expand protection for people on bikes and other vulnerable road users by writing letters and feeding into reports and engagement opportunities.

Here are just a few examples of the initiatives our volunteer advocates have undertaken in the last months to push for safer biking for people of all ages and abilities:

Tri-Cities: The committee is celebrating the City of Coquitlam’s plan to repurpose existing parking spaces on Pipeline Road between Guildford Way and Lincoln Avenue into a separated, all ages and abilities, bidirectional, protected micromobility lane. The Committee is also supporting the BC Active Transportation grant for the Nelson route.

North Shore: Committee members have expressed gratitude to the District of North Vancouver for the improvements made on Main Street near Canadian Tire. They are also providing feedback on the City of North Vancouver’s potential plans for a safer active travel lane on Chesterfield Ave.

Burnaby: Burnaby’s committee has been conducting assessment rides and providing reports on the Edmonds Town Centre Cycling Plan, Holdom Overpass and the BC Parkway. They have a social ride scheduled for Nov 16.

Richmond: Committee members are celebrating Steveston’s plans to reduce speed limits and widen sidewalks. The Committee also hosted a social ride and conducted an assessment ride of Williams Road.

Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows: The committee has submitted a formal report to Council on suggested improvements for the Hammond Road Multi Use Path and also put forward a number of requests for the 2025 Budget and the next 5-Year Financial Plan, including funding to complete planned cycling improvements as per Council’s Strategic Plan.

Vancouver/UBC: The Committee has extended their support for the proposed infrastructure improvements that will extend the Dunsmuir protected cycling lanes west towards the Stanley Park Causeway, and connect to the seawall paths at Broughton. They have also provided some recommendations for the proposed improvements. The committee has also submitted feedback on improvements regarding changes to 16th and Wallace following a serious crash in front of a school in the area.

New Westminster: The committee has submitted recommendations to TransLink advocating for more secure bike parking at the New West SkyTrain Station. They have also hosted a number of social rides.

Langley: Committee members have updated their map of priority infrastructure gaps and submitted them to engineering staff. The committee are also advocating for the removal of maze gates and barriers which present challenges to recumbent bikes, cargo bikes, and other adaptive mobility devices.

Surrey/White Rock: Committee members and HUB staff met with the Mayor of Surrey to highlight the importance of investing in active travel to support affordability and transit gaps. They have also submitted questions and feedback on project plans for 140 Street and are advocating for safer options for people on bikes during the construction on Fraser Hwy .

Delta: Committee members are continuing their push for safer active transportation options towards the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. They are also working with the developer of the 56th Street Mall to ensure there are safe active transportation options for people biking to and through the mall and have submitted a request to Council to establish an Active Transportation Committee.
