What have your Local Committees been up to in November?
What have your Local Committees been up to in November?
HUB Local Committees and HUB’s Regional Advisory Committee have been busy advocating for better biking and safer roads for vulnerable road users - hosting monthly committee meetings, meeting with municipal staff and City Councillors, collaborating with active transportation stakeholders and community groups, hosting social and assessment bike rides and pushing municipalities to expand protection for people on bikes and other vulnerable road users by writing letters and feeding into reports and engagement opportunities.
Here are just a few examples of the initiatives our volunteer advocates have undertaken in the last months to push for safer biking for people of all ages and abilities:
Burnaby: Committee members have been feeding into plans on the Edmonds Town Centre and will be meeting with city staff to provide additional recommendations. They have a social ride scheduled for Nov 30. Register free!
Delta, Ladner, Tsawwassen, North Delta, and Tsawwassen First Nation: Committee members have submitted a proposal to the City of Delta requesting the formation of an Active Travel Committee and the hiring of an Active Travel staff person.
Langley: Committee chairs have met with Langley RCMP to draw attention to the recent amendments to the Motor Vehicle Reform Act including the safe passing distance law. The committee is also actively recruiting a new chair and co-chair. Find out more.
Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows: The Committee submitted a letter to the Council requesting clarification about some changes to the Strategic Plan that relate to active travel routes. The committee is also actively recruiting a new chair and co-chair. Find out more.
New Westminster: The Committee is working with the Community Bike Month project that has refurbished and distributed one hundred free bicycles in 2024. There are still over a hundred applicants waiting for bicycles.
North Shore: Committee members have supported the City of North Vancouver Council plans for additional restrictions on no right turns on red lights at high crash intersections. The Committee has also submitted feedback for the Midtown and Chesterfield mobility report.
Regional Advisory Committee: The Committee will be reaching out to the newly appointed Provincial ministers to explore how HUB Cycling can help the ministries help deliver their mandates.
The Regional Advisory Committee will also work with local committees to encourage them to reach out to newly elected members of the legislative assembly in their community.
Tri-Cities: The committee received a briefing on Seaview/Glenayre Cycling Improvements and will work on the next steps for advocacy. They are also urging the community to feed into three engagement opportunities.
Richmond: The Committee is exploring the feasibility of local petitions to encourage speed reductions to 30km/h on select neighborhood streets. The committee will also be conducting an assessment of Williams Road and has met with City staff to feed into the Richmond Bike map on informal routes.
Surrey/White Rock: The Committee reviewed plans for the 140 Street project and has reached out to road designers with additional questions.
Vancouver/UBC: Committee finalized and submitted assessment reports to the City on 22nd St Bikeway, Kerr St Bikeway, Slocan St. Committee is also finalizing its mid-term report card of City Council and Parks Board.
Most of our committees take a well-deserved meeting break in December, but make sure to check out their monthly meeting schedule in the new year! Bikehub.ca/lc
