Remembering Jack Becker, a Force for Improved Cycling

April 28, 2021

The HUB Cycling team would like to acknowledge the passing of one of our former board members, Jack (Hans-Jurgen) Becker.

Jack was a board member of HUB Cycling (at the time called the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition) and the Chair of the Vancouver Local Committee for a number of years in the 2000s, an important time of growth and expansion for the organization. Jack was a prolific writer for the organization's publication The Urbane Cyclist and served as an influential activist and mentor for others to improve cycling in the region including being a key part of the successful campaign for the protected bicycle path on the Canada Line Bridge.  He strongly believed that cycling is one of the options for moving towards vibrant, liveable, environmentally sustainable, and green communities.

Not only did Jack play a pivotal role in HUB's history, but for many other organizations in the cycling community including the Velo-city Global 2012 Conference held in Vancouver in 2012, Third Wave Cycling Group Inc., VeloWorks Cycling Society, British Columbia Cycling Coalition, founding member of the Sustainable Transportation Coalition and Canada Bikes, and director of Bike to Work BC, City of Vancouver Bicycle Advisory Committee,  the Vancouver & UBC Area Transit Plan Stakeholder Group, BC Trails Strategy Stakeholders Committee, and the Toronto Cycling Committee.

HUB Cycling sends our condolences to Jack's family.
