This August, HUB Cycling and our community of bike-lovers is here to show you that shopping by bike is easier than you think!

Today, Gerald Joe, an avid HUB Cycling volunteer is here to share his tips on how he runs his errands by bike.

How long have you been shopping by bike?

“I have used a bike to do nearly all of my shopping for groceries, household supplies and gardening items for many years.”

How do you carry items when you shop by bike?

“I highly recommend a light e-bike with a rear rack and at least one large pannier plus a sturdy backpack. Bike share systems like Mobi by Rogers or Lime e-scooter sharing are also good options for those not wanting to deal with bike maintenance and bike theft risks. Wearing waterproof pants, shoes, gloves and a light jacket are useful for getting errands done in those rainy, damp Vancouver conditions.”

What do you enjoy most about shopping by bike?

“Road traffic can get very congested downtown and vehicle parking can be a challenge. With Vancouver’s many separated cycling lanes and bike racks in front of most shops, shopping by bike is usually quicker and easier than the alternatives.”
