Celebrating 25 Years of Accomplishments

In 1998, the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition, now HUB Cycling, was established by a handful of individuals aspiring to make cycling accessible and safe.

As 2023 comes to a close, a year in which we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible strides we've made together at HUB Cycling. This year has been filled with meaningful achievements, all made possible by the unwavering support of our dedicated community.

Here are 25 things that you have helped us accomplish over the past 25 years:

  • We worked towards reforming British Columbia’s outdated Motor Vehicle Laws to better protect vulnerable road users like people walking, rolling or cycling.
  • We ensured that a safe passing distance law was passed in the B.C. legislature in Spring 2023.
  • Convinced the provincial government to introduce programs like income-tested rebates for electric-assist bikes in 2023 to help more people cycle more often.
  • Collaborated with the provincial government to launch programs like Everyone Rides Grade 4-5 in 2020, a program developed by HUB Cycling that provides British Columbia elementary students with skills, confidence and the opportunity to learn to ride their bikes.
  • Recommended priorities for active transportation policy, cycling education and promotion, and the planning, designing, and implementing cycling infrastructure.

What is the Impact of Your Generous Gift?

$2,500 will help us develop programs for communities facing social, cultural, and/or financial barriers to cycling.
$250 helps us support infrastructure research for an advocacy project like cycle highways phase 2 analysis.
$100 will help HUB organize online learning like our Biking for Mental Health webinar to encourage people of all ages and abilities to bike.

  • We worked with the federal government and the Immigrant Services Society of BC (ISSofBC) to introduce programs like the Newcomer Bike Mentorship program, which encourages newcomers in Canada to adopt cycling as their transportation choice.
  • Reached over 3,000-lifetime HUB members who are crucial in giving HUB Cycling a voice to advocate for better and safer conditions for people who bike.
  • Organized events, including Go By Bike Week, Bike to School Week, Bike to Shop, Bike the Night, and Bike Shorts, for more than two decades with aim to get more people to cycle more often. Motivated hundreds of thousands of new cycling participants in Go By Bike Week.
  • Created the #UnGapTheMap campaign in 2017 and have since identified 400 priority gaps across Metro Vancouver.
  • Filled more than 200 critical gaps identified by the #UnGapTheMap campaign across Metro Vancouver.
  • Published six in-depth cycling research reports, including:
         a. Cycle Highways in Metro Vancouver,
         b. Unlocking Equity in Metro Vancouver's Cycling Network,
         c. Cycling and Older Buildings Report,
         d. The State of Cycling in Metro Vancouver,
         e. Readiness for Shared Micromobility and
         f. Not Just Bike Racks.
  • Launched HUB Cycling's 10 local committees and the youth advisory committee, which provides community members with the opportunity to meet regularly to discuss and advise on cycling issues specific to each municipality.
  • We worked to allow bikes on public transit, including buses, the Seabus, the West Coast Express, the SkyTrain and the Bike Bus!
  • Launched the Bike Friendly Buildings Program that consults developers on making major developments like the Vancouver General Hospital and the Bentall Centre more bike-friendly.
  • Worked with ICBC to develop updated training modules for Claims Adjusters and improve Call Center phone options for people cycling. Now, reporting a claim for bike damage and injury is more seamless, offering a tailored experience.
  • Secured commitment from the provincial government in 2023 to significantly increase funding for their active transportation capital projects, totalling $100 million in new funding over three years.
  • Development of the Arbutus Greenway to include temporary paving of the route, improvements at street crossings, and creating safe and intuitive connections to existing bike routes for all active transportation modes.
  • Help fill all the critical gaps along the South False Creek Seaside Greenway from Cambie to Granville Island in the Seaside Greenway to create safe and comfortable connections.
  • We collaborated with TransLink on developing the Major Bikeway Network (MBN) concept and proposed an 850-kilometre network of safe and comfortable cycling facilities, as part of TransLink’s Regional Cycling Strategy.
  • We worked with cycling advocacy groups across the country to develop a toolkit for everyone invested in moving around their communities in a manner that is more affordable, accessible, sustainable and joyful.
  • We collaborated with ICBC to develop clear communication with real-life examples of crash scenarios involving people cycling. For example, a person driving is 100% at fault in a collision that occurs when a vehicle driver overtakes a person cycling in order to make a right turn.
  • Advised and commented on the implementation of the Active Transportation Strategy as part of the provincial External Stakeholders Working Group, an instrumental step in the release of the BC Government's first-ever Active Transportation Strategy.
  • Released our vision for the future as part of TransLink's Transport 2050.
  • Cycling safety improvements, including a protected barrier, have been added to the Stanley Park Causeway in Vancouver.
  • Provided ongoing feedback on the BC Active Transportation Design Guide.
