Both Sides of the Improved Ironworkers Memorial Bridge Now Open to Bikes

September 4, 2015

Construction is complete on the second side of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, and it is now open to people on bike and on foot. The shared bike and walkways are now 2.5 metres wide --- more than double the width of the original. This allows for safe passing for users moving at different speeds. Additional safety improvements include better lighting and safety fencing. ‡ Cyclists and pedestrians make more than 148,000 trips across the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge each year, so these improvements were encouraged over many years by HUB Cycling.

"The conclusion of this project closes a critical gap in the active transportation network between the North Shore, Vancouver, and Burnaby,͟ said Tony Valente, chair of HUB Cycling North Shore Committee. ͞People walking and cycling across the bridge are already enjoying greatly improved safety on the east sidewalk. We are excited now that the west sidewalk is also accessible to all."
