Bike to School Week 2019 Results
We’re beyond excited to announce that the 124 Metro Vancouver schools registered in Bike to School Week this year blew past last year's highest participation numbers.
School Champions encouraged 11,036 students to take 32,736 bike trips & 16,033 walking & rolling trips to school between May 27-31st. Participating schools were located across Metro Vancouver - we were particularly glad to have Langley, Maple Ridge, and Delta schools participating this year.
In addition to enjoying the benefits of active travel - like less congestion in school zones, schools were awarded prizes for high participation & cycling mode share based on school population.
We awarded grand prizes to the following schools:
- Top Riders: Queen Elizabeth Annex (Vancouver) got 68.49% of students riding at least once throughout the week
- Runner Up Riders: Mt Lehman Elementary (Langley) got 65.38% of students riding at least once throughout the week
- Top Trips: Ross Road Elementary (North Vancouver) achieved 56.4% cycling mode share
- Runner Up Trips: Franklin Elementary (Vancouver) achieved 51.98% cycling mode share throughout the week
And last but not least, Ladner Elementary (Delta) took home the Best First Time School prize with 21.99% cycling mode share - this is a school community to watch in 2020!
We know that trips to school make up a sizable portion of daily transportation trips in our region, so every biking, walking, and rolling trip to school is not only enjoyable, it’s part of shifting our mode share to more sustainable transportation options.
Big thanks to students, parents, and school staff in participating schools - see you on the streets this summer!
