First, it was the rejection of protected bike lanes on the redesigned segment of Broadway. Then it was the removal of the beloved Stanley Park bike lane. Some concerning anti-bike trends in Vancouver have marked this year so far. Our elected officials fail to ensure that we are building infrastructure accessible to people of all ages, abilities, socio-economic backgrounds, and all modes of transportation.

Marsha Lederman in their article in Globe and Mail article said it best: “Metro Vancouver was in the middle of its “Go By Bike” Week – and the country in the midst of a wildfire crisis – when the mayor’s ABC Party sent out a congratulatory tweet about the removal of most of a temporary bike lane from Stanley Park.”

It’s time to tell the decision-makers what you expect of them and what future cities should look like. Advocacy groups, like HUB Cycling, are often at the forefront of initiating this social change and play a crucial role in shaping public opinion, influencing policies, and driving positive change in society. Joining the HUB Cycling Local Committee or Board of Directors grants you a platform to amplify your voice and advocate for the issues you deeply care about.

Joining the board of HUB Cycling is not merely an act of service; it's an opportunity to help build  happier, healthier, more connected communities. There has never been a more critical time to step up and join HUB Cycling’s Board of Directors. We need you.

Özge Yazar, a practicing commercial litigation lawyer, joined HUB Cycling’s Board in 2021.

“In the summer of 2021 I was training for a 4,000 km bike-packing race, and I got a chance to cycle all around the Lower Mainland. There is so much potential here for a better cycling experience for everyone. HUB’s mission is to get more people cycling more often— I was inspired to join the board because I felt that I could contribute with my experience, so I stood for election in 2021,” says Özge.

HUB Cycling’s board is the governing body that steers the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies, as well as by making sure the organization has adequate resources to advance its mission.

This year, HUB Cycling is especially looking for individuals with an accounting and strategic leadership background to join our esteemed Board of Directors to shape the future of sustainable urban mobility while making a meaningful impact on communities across the region. We strongly encourage people from under-represented and marginalized communities to apply. Directors of the Board can join meetings virtually and do not need to be residents of Vancouver.
